At first glance, most label printers probably look the same. But you could easily make the wrong purchase for your business if you don’t take a closer look at the details. There are plenty of online debates over which is the best label printer for Amazon FBA. However, your idea of “best” will depend on several factors. These include your budget, the size of your business, the type of computer you own and even your competence level when it comes to making repairs.

Label printers are a hot topic as most online sellers need to buy their own if they want to cut down on costs. Amazon will label your packages for you, but this will set you back about 20 cents per unit. Investing in a label printer will save you a lot of money down the road.

One characteristic that all Amazon sellers should look for in a label printer is its compatibility with e-commerce channels. From here, your decision will rest on what best fits your needs. If you don’t know what your needs are yet, then don’t worry. Take a look below to read our assessments of three popular label makers among online sellers, including their benefits and drawbacks.

Dymo Labelwriter 4XL

The Dymo Labelwriter is considered the go-to option for many Amazon sellers. There are several different versions, but for the sake of saving space, we’ll focus on the Dymo Labelwriter 4XL for now.

In addition to Amazon, the Dymo is also compatible with eBay, Etsy, PayPal and third-party postage vendors (stamps.com, Endicia, and Pitney Bowes). New Amazon sellers love the Dymo because it’s affordable, easy to set up, and a trustworthy brand. On most of the “best label maker” lists, you’ll find at least one Dymo product listed.

Price

The Dymo LabelWriter 4XL Thermal Label Printer is currently $159.95 on Amazon. Many consider the Dymo affordable as you don’t have to worry about paying for ink or toner. Thermal printers differ from inkjet printers as they transfer or activate pigments using tiny heating elements. These types of printers create shipping labels, safety signs, barcodes, etc. Keep in mind that you still have to pay for thermal labels, which can run up to $40 for a pack of 8 rolls on Amazon.

Pros

Though this is the same for all thermal printers, the Dymo requires less maintenance and is overall quite reliable as it features less moving parts than your typical inkjet printer. This is a great characteristic for beginners in the online selling business – imagine all the profits you could lose if your printer went down!

In addition to being reliable and affordable, the Dymo 4XL is speedy with the capability of printing 129 labels per-minute per four-row label. The speed of your printer is one of the most important features you should consider as it can affect the pricing. If you don’t need to print 129 labels per minute, it might be worth your time to check out the Dymo Labelwriter 450 Turbo which is half the price of the 4XL. This model can print up to 71 labels per minute, and could be a better fit for your budding business.

Cons

As with any product, there are also some drawbacks you should consider. Keep in mind that you’ll have to pay more for Dymo’s proprietary labels, which are about 50 percent more expensive per label than a third-party vendor. The Dymo printer also requires labels with index holes. You’ll most likely get a “printer is out of paper” error if you don’t use the right label.

Software

The Dymo has software that’s compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Mac OS v10.4 and later. Setup is fairly easy and similar to normal printers. Just plug the USB into your computer, and the rest should be pretty simple.

To summarize, the Dymo 4XL is a great thermal printer that has high ratings in the Amazon seller community. It offers everything an online seller needs to complete their orders and comes in a variety of models for different budgets. With the Dymo printer, you’re going to get a product that’s reliable and simple to use.

Zebra GC420d

Zebra-brand label printers are also quite popular among online sellers. They come with a set of different benefits and drawbacks compared to the Dymo printers. The first and biggest difference between Zebra and Dymo is the price – the Zebra GC420d sells for almost $300 on Amazon. The higher price tag doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better, though, as you’ll have to take the size of your business into account first.

Large-scale needs

Zebra printers are generally used in commercial operations, or places where there’s a large volume of products going in and out. You would typically see these in a warehouse environment, not someone’s home office. That’s because they can print more labels per minute than most other brands. The Zebra GC420d can print a standard shipping label in 2 seconds. We recommend this printer for business owners who expect to print at least 100 labels per day.

Like the Dymo, the Zebra label maker is compatible with e-commerce channels like Amazon, eBay, Etsy and Paypal as well as third-party postage vendors. One of the notable benefits of a Zebra printer is the lower cost for labels. A pack of 20 Zebra-compatible rolls will cost you at $72.99 on Amazon. While the rolls are cheaper than Dymo labels, keep in mind that you’ll probably be buying more in the long run. Like we already said, Zebra printers are ideal for online sellers who plan to print at least 100 labels per day.

Software

Mac owners will have to put in a little extra work installing their Zebra printer as it does not come with drivers. Drivers also aren’t included for LINUX or UNIX. Check out this tutorial for a step-by-step guide on how to install a Zebra printer on a Mac.

To recap, Zebra printers are better for large-scale operations as they can print more labels per minute. Big business owners are willing to spend more for a Zebra than a Dymo in order to fulfill a larger volume of shipping orders. Take these factors into account before making a purchase.

ROLLO Shipping Label Printer

What sets ROLLO apart from its competitors is its compatibility with any Thermal Direct Label, including free UPS labels. Dymo and Zebra printer owners are required to buy labels that are brand specific, which are often more expensive than your average label. Brands have the ability to charge more for their labels if they’re the only option available. This isn’t the case with ROLLO. Its website states that users shipping 100 units a month will save up to $250 a year on labels by switching to ROLLO.

Price

The ROLLO Shipping Label Printer is priced in between the Dymo and Zebra printers at $179.99 on Amazon. According to its product description, the ROLLO prints “nearly twice as fast as the closest competitor” at 150mm/s. While it’s speed is certainly impressive, you may not want to purchase a ROLLO if you own a Mac as it’s only compatible with version 10.9 and newer. The printer is also compatible with Windows XP and newer.

Pros

ROLLO is known for its 5-star customer support. You can contact their team by email, phone, and remote desktop. And on the off-chance you can’t reach a support member, you can also check out their detailed training guides for operating your printer. One five-star ROLLO review on Amazon raves, “it’s super fast, prints great and the customer service is by far the best you will deal with.”

Cons

One drawback about the ROLLO is that it doesn’t come with a label roll holder. Label roll holders help align your labels, so they print without error. You can buy a ROLLO roll label holder on Amazon for $19.99.

So what do you think is the best label printer for Amazon FBA?

Assessing the needs of your business will help you choose the best label printer for Amazon FBA. While the Dymo is considered the go-to for many Amazon sellers, it doesn’t have the speed of Zebra or the cheap label options that come along with the ROLLO. We encourage you to do even more research and talk with other users.
